Week 4
April 27, 2018
This week we starting printing the pieces for our 10x10x10 cm cube. The printers we have access to have a surface area of around 12 cm, so batches of 3-4 pieces are being printed at a time. The biggest constraint we are running into is time, as the batches of 3-4 pieces will take 8 hours to print each, and the 10x10x10 cm cube will have a total of 18 pieces. Another problem we are running into is the morphing of pieces during the 3D printing process. Some pieces (such as the top left piece shown in figure 1) have excess material on the surface, or have cracked surfaces. We will sand down the faces of the pieces before paint is applied and the magnets are added. If necessary we may need to also reprint some pieces.
In addition to printing the pieces we have begun modeling the other puzzle objects we plan to make. Helena has created a 10x10x10 cm house using 12 pieces, shown below in figure 2.

We also began planning the next two puzzles that we want to make, a bus and a boat. Shown below in figures 3 and 4 is a model of the bus' shape and a concept image for the boat.
